Lore

The Shrine of Winter serves as a gateway between the Shaded Woods and Drangleic Castle. It is found in the by taking the western path at the Ruined Fork Road bonfire. Access to the Shrine is initially blocked by a door that demands a vast number of souls to open. Only those who have proven their worth may proceed through the Shrine to the foreboding mountaintop.

The tablets in the Shrine of Winter depict fragments of the larger stone relief carving in the Dragon Shrine, which is located above the door to the Petrified Egg tower.

The rubble in the road in the Shaded Woods wasn't always there. Under normal circumstances, the Shrine of Winter is on a side path that doesn't need to be traversed. What you need to access it, larger and powerful souls, then hints that the Shrine contains either information that is trying to be kept secret, or a function that isn't supposed to be accessed by your average Undead.

If you look on the walls of the shrine you can see tablets that show a history concerning what looks to be the history of Drangleic and possibly the creation of the Emerald Herald. The tablets show two hooded men, a hooded woman, and a small hooded child.

• Tablet 1: Two hooded men standing while a hooded woman kneels beside a small hooded child.
  • The robed figure with the staff is resting his hand on the head of the child. Lord Aldia and the Emerald Herald, perhaps? The man's robes, staff, and guiding hand give him a shepherd-like appearance.
• Tablet 2: There is a large dragon who resembles the Ancient Dragon, and three lesser dragons (one in the background) who might represent Guardian Dragons. The rays emanating from the large dragon imply that its presence is exalted.
• Tablet 3: There is a large spherical object just below and to the left of the dragon's head. This is assumed to be the Petrified Egg.
• Tablet 4: The figures in the relief are humans who seem to be gazing, bowing, or otherwise prostrating themselves before the large dragon or its egg.

Alternatively, the tablets may be a reflection of the events prior to Dark Souls.

• Tablet 1: Two hooded men, Nito and Gwyn, Hooded woman, Izalith, and a small hooded figure, Furtive Pygmy.
• Tablet 2: Gwyn conspires with Seath.
• Tablet 3: Battle with Dragons.
• Tablet 4: Furtive Pygmy leaves?

The structure of the Shrine itself closely resembles the small altar where you find the Petrified Dragon Egg. The three snakes in the center are interesting as well. Each of then has either had the head removed (most likely) or it was created without the heads on them. Some suppose that the serpents represent Frampt, Kaathe, and a third unnamed. They hang over what appears to be the Lordvessel.
