Lore
When Forossa fell to war its citizens were scattered. Many of them became brigands and thieves, however there were a few stalwart souls who decided to live by the code of honor.
Lothian was born a peasant in Forossa. By the time he disappeared from the records of history he had been given the title of general. His diligence and determination were unmatched, especially on the battlefield and his ferocity was unbeatable. Growing up in a land that worshiped war and was constantly embroiled in battle, this allowed him to ascend the ranks efficiently.
Lothian is most famous for fighting without a shield, and this is how he earned his moniker. He fought with a black axe that has come to be known as the Dragonslayer’s Crescent Axe. Why Lothian chose to fight without a shield is unknown, it may be that when he began combat he could not afford a shield, and after attaining success, had become fixed in his habits so chose to continue in them. It is also possible that he chose to fight without a shield because he was dual wielding, however this is unlikely because there is no other weapon in the game attributed to Lothian and only one Dragonslayer’s Crescent Axe can be found.
The fact that Lothian’s black axe has become known as the Dragonslayer’s Crescent Axe is due to the legends surrounding his disappearance. After a long career, Lothian abruptly retired from the battlefield and disappeared, leaving his absence subject to speculation. Many believed he had set off to slay the legendary dragon and hence why his black axe became known as the Dragonslayer’s.
We find his beloved Stone Ring in Things Betwixt on the body of an ogre. Perhaps Lothian became undead and travelled to the land of Drangleic eventually becoming hollow? A fate like that seems unfitting for such a mighty hero.
In an earlier version of Dark Souls 2, Lothian’s axe had the following description:
Black Axe from the tales of Shieldless Lothian.
Balances manoeuvrability and power but require strength and dexterity.
Long ago, many tried and failed to seek out this legendary axe, and with time it faded into obscurity.
