Pthumeru

Pthumeru was an ancient city built by superhumans (the Pthumerians) who uncovered the secrets of the god Truth.

Pthumeru is deep underground. It was dug out, intentionally built as a civilization underground. It is so for the purpose of escaping the Blood Moon, the thing that brings out humanity's beastly nature.

Pthumeru Ihyll was the title of both the Phumerian monarch and its capital.

The Church is a Reflection of Pthumeru

The church followed in the footsteps of Pthumeru at it's peak, or coming from its decline. That is why the church servants and Pthumerians have the same gaunt look and pale blue skin.

The Cathedral Ward Watchers carry bells, held by rope around their necks. The bells are somehow linked to the labyrinths as stated by their description: "…bell discovered in the old underground labyrinth", and the Sinister Root Chalice, "..summons the Sinister Resonant Bell. The bell-ringing woman appears to be a mad Pthumerian." If the Healing Church spawned from discoveries made within those labyrinths, who is to say that they didn't come in contact with the Pthumerians? Perhaps those who watch Cathedral Ward are dressing as them to emulate their greatness, or could they even be Pthumerian? It would make sense that since the Pthumerians worshiped the Great Ones as the Church now does, the remains of this lost civilization would ally with the Church.
