Lore
Lord Wornir, best known as the conqueror of Carthus, sentenced countless souls to gruesome deaths, keen to outlive them all. He brought many lords to their knees and ground their crowns to dust. Then the crowns became one, and Wolnir, the one High Lord.
When Wolnir fell to the Abyss, he was gripped by a fear of true darkness, and pleaded to the gods for the first time. His holy sword, together with three armlets stripped from the corpses of clerics, gave him some semblance of comfort. In the Abyss, Wolnir discovered the Pyromancy that inspired the black arts of the grave wardens.
Deep inside the Catacombs of Carthus, a gigantic, skeletal incarnation of Wolnir can be fought by interacting with an ornate goblet, a sinister vessel made from the skull of a noble king. An ominous air emits from the chalice, gripping the hearts of those who peer at it as if determined to drag them to the world of the dead.

any connotation from the use of the goblet to start the boss battle?
It is called "Holy Remains", in the unused content.
Sinister vessel made from the skull of a noble king. Placed on the altar within the catacombs, but its origins are unclear. An ominous air emits from the chalice, gripping the hearts of those who peer at it as if determined to drag them to the world of the dead.
I suppose it was first planned for it to be taken by the player and brought upon the altar in order to unlock and fight Wolnir, or something along the lines. Regardless, that's the only official thing said about the goblet. Looks like even if it was used, it would have raised the same questions.
You have a heart of gold. Don't let them take it from you…
