The Great Dead One is a figure from history in the Dark Souls universe. The Great Dead One is only mentioned specifically in the Singer's Dress item description as being the one who gave the Milfanito their song, but it may also be referenced in the Darkdrift description where it is said the katana was wielding by one who gave us the first death.

Theories

The Great Dead One is Nito.

Many theorize the Great Dead One is a reference to Nito from Dark Souls 1. His connection by name to the Milfanito and Fenito indicates that these beings were created by Nito, and the fact that the Great Dead One gave the Milfanito their song ties it all together, as the creator is likely to be the giver of the song.

There is also an imperfect link elsewhere in the game. When the Rotten drops the Old Dead One's soul, it is a clear connection to Nito's soul from DS1. Could it be a coincidence that there is an "Old Dead One" and a "Great Dead One"? These figures have such similar names and apparent functions that they may in fact be one and the same.
