Gower was an assassin responsible for the death of a half-dozen kings and several distinguished clergymen.

Gower owned a ring that protects the exposed back from any damage received, so as to carry out assassinations with impunity.

Ironically enough, Gower's ring is found in the Shaded Woods, a place where the spirits of the wood seek to back-stab at almost every opportunity.
