Lore

The two kingdoms were founded by the same man, but were reduced to rivalry and spite.

A long time ago, the Prince of Alken loved the Princess of Venn, but their love was forbidden. Two bell towers were constructed to symbolize their love. The Prince made living dolls to guard the bells. The peculiar art of puppetry is a vestige of the two lost lands.

The territory of Alken is now the Iron Keep, Earthen Peak, and Brume Tower. The territory of Venn is now the Lost Bastille.

Same Origin, Not Same Man

In the video made by VaatiVidya called "Dark Souls 2 Lore: Found in Translation", the current description of the Ring of Blades was actually the result many mediocre translations done by one of three translation companies employed during Dark Souls 2's development. The ring's description when properly translated was intended to say:

"A ring of power modelled(modeled) after Adgars, known as the Mad Warrior of Arken[Alken]. Increases the equipper's physical attack power.
Two countries, Arken[Alken] and Vane[Venn], once existed on these lands. Though they shared the same origins, they despised each other greatly."

VaatiVidya then speculates that the origin of Alken and Venn was Majula, which is supported by the Majula Rotunda and how everything on the left side resides in Venn. This would also indicate that everything to the right belongs to Alken, revealing that Heide and No Man's Wharf were also part of Venn. As for the Rotunda, Vaati speculates that it was built by the two countries due to the animosity between them.

Scorching Iron Scepter
A scorching-hot iron scepter. Used to activate contraptions by transferring heat to Brume Tower. When the Old Iron King wrested this dilapidated region from kingdom of Venn, the act required all the resources the enfeebled lord could muster. But with the discovery of this iron-producing miracle, he was reborn as a powerful leader.

Manikin Claws/Knife/Sabre/Shield
Used by the manikins of Harvest Valley. The peculiar art of puppetry is a vestige of the two lost lands. The Queen, entranced by poison, used it to beckon unknowing souls to the defiled valley.

Bell Keeper Helm
An old helmet that is oddly comfortable. Belonged to an Bell Keeper. To this day, the forbidden love of the Prince of Alken and the princess of Venn manipulates these marionettes. Surely they never imagined that their dolls would outlast their own kingdoms.

Bell Keeper's Seal
Ring of the Bell Keeper covenant. Join this covenant and wear this ring to be automatically summoned to the world of an invader of the bell keeper's domain. The twin bells symbolize the bond between two lovers who could never be united. The bell keepers are their eternal guardians. For that is their love; that is their curse.

Bell Keeper Bow/Shield
Used by bell keepers. Very light, and requiring hardly any strength. The bells symbolize forbidden love; the bell keepers, their faithful guardians, ever-ready to annihilate trespassers. They will stand watch, for ever and ever, these determined, if ill-fated, marionettes.

Bell Keeper
The bells are the symbols of forbidden love, and the marionettes who defend them do so with zealous passion. They've been watching over, and ringin', the bells forever. If you seek to stop them, or to ring a bell for yourself, you'll have to face these tiny terrors.

Manikin Armor
Top of the manikins of Harvest Valley. The peculiar art of puppetry is a vestige of the two lost lands. A queen breathed life into these dolls with the very miasma that afflicted her poison-drenched bosom, so that she would have slaves to serve her temperamental will.

Ring of Blades
The Ring of Blades is modeled after the mad knight of Alken's weapon of choice. Increases physical attack. The kingdoms of Alken and Venn long ago flourished on these very rounds. They were both founded by the same man, but were reduced to rivalry and spite.
